EXCITING BALL GAME AT LISTOWEL MINOR BASEBALL DAY by Heather Monden
The Campbell Insurance OBA Bantam Mitchell Astros were invited to Listowel on Saturday, June 6th to play in their Listowel Minor Baseball Day.  The first pitch was delivered at 11am under a sunny sky which provided perfect weather conditions for this nail-biter of a game.

Trevor DIXON took to the mound right off the bat (pun intended) stretching out his 90 pitches to the end of the fifth inning.  He struck out five batters, made the only successful pick-off of the game at first base, and pitched two of my favourite types of innings…THREE UP, THREE DOWN!  This certainly set the tone for the game for the entire team as they all played one of the most enjoyable ball games that many of our fans have watched in a long while.

Single runs were scored by Ryan HARMER, Jake MONDEN and DIXON.  Reid RAMSEYER and call-up Kyle RICHARDSON both brought in two runs each.  All 10 Mitchell batters were on the sticks as they all hit the ball and they all made it on base.

Defensively the team worked well together.  HARMER rocked centerfield making three big catches, and our catcher, RAMSEYER, got two runners out at first after the third strike.  First baseman, MONDEN, did not let any throw past him and he completed nine successful outs on his bag and caught two foul pop-flies.  Call-up Tyson McINTOSH occupied second base where he assisted in three of those outs.   Jackson MacARTHUR is a valuable player who can play any position and rotated throughout the infield and outfield.  Call-up, Ashton CNOCKAERT, and James COPELAND balanced out our outfield.

It was not an error free game, but the boys were able to shake off their mistakes and forge on. Curt EIDT was the game closing pitcher.  He certainly brought his A game as he struck out three batters during his two innings.

The score was tight for the entire game, so as Listowel took to the batter‘s box in the bottom of the 7th, it was imperative the Mitchell boys held them.  The final play of the game brought the sort of excitement that makes baseball the best sport ever.  There were two out, runners on first and third and Listowel‘s biggest hitter was on deck.  Things were tense to say the least.  We held our breath, EIDT delivered the pitch, the bat connected, and the ball skyrocketed straight up in foul territory.  MONDEN camped out under the ball and caught the giant pop fly clinching the 7 to 5 win for the Mitchell Astros.

Now that was good baseball!  Fantastic game boys!
