22U MAKE IT TO FINALS IN OBA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT
The Larry Hudson Chevrolet Buick GMC 22U Mitchell Junior Astros played in their OBA Championship tournament on August 5th to 7th in Wyoming.

The Larry Hudson Chevrolet Buick GMC 22U Mitchell Junior Astros played in their OBA Championship tournament on August 5th to 7th in Wyoming.

It was a round robin tournament made up of four teams:  Essex, Wyoming, Corunna, and Mitchell.

The boys played each team once, were seeded and all advanced to semis on Sunday.  Mitchell won its semi-final game against Corunna and advanced to the finals against Essex.

The games were all tight matches that could have gone either way.  Mitchell lost Game 1 against Essex 7 to 6, but then came back with a vengeance winning the next three games (Game 2 against Wyoming 8 to 7, Game 3 vs. Corunna 7 to 6, Game 4 vs. Corunna 3 to 1).

The mound was occupied by Eric GETTLER and Eric TAYLOR on Friday and Sunday.  These two crushed it as usual.  Other appearances were made by Josh EIDT, Tanner DIETZ (first time since Pee Wee or Bantam), Judd WALKER, Lake TAYLOR, and Trevor DIXON.

WALKER got his third homerun of the season in our semi-final as he cranked it over the left field fence.

Wyatt HUITEMA was top of the leaderboard for the weekend with 5 runs.  Followed by Jake MONDEN and Eric TAYLOR each earning 4 runs.  Ryan HARMER, Lake TAYLOR, and Tanner DIETZ each scored 3 and WALKER, GETTLER, and Stephen BIRD each added a single.

The finals were stressful yet so very exciting!  HARMER, once again, made some incredible plays out in center field as he caught several fly balls.  He wasn’t alone though, fielders, WALKER, GETTLER, AND DIETZ all stole several runs away from the unbeatable Essex team in our final game.  Catcher, HUITEMA, and first baseman, MONDEN, both made some spectacular diving attempts for uncatchable balls, but once that gloves hit the ground it’s tough to keep it in there.  We played sound defensive games all weekend, and the final game was no exception.  We did load the bases a couple times and Ben SMALL clobbered the ball earning an RBI allowing DIETZ to score our first run and put us in the lead.  We struggled to score runs in the finals despite loading the bases up a couple times.  DIETZ barrel rolled across the plate again in the 6th inning padding our lead and amping up the excitement factor, but Essex answered back with two runs of their own and we only had one last chance to win this game.

Bases loaded, two out, top of 7, we just need a base hit to keep this game going.  I wish I could tell you we did it, but regretfully, we just could not cash in anymore runs.

The boys played their hearts out.  They were incredible.  I could not have asked for anything more.

Congratulations to my team – OBA Finalists!

We're not done yet!  August 12 to 14 we play in our Year End Senior League Tourny.  Friday night in Mitchell at 7:30pm, Saturday at 4pm and 7pm in Listowel and hopefully we'll see you in Woodstock on Sunday for the semis and finals.

Keep rooting for us!  Roll 'Stros!
