15U OBA Astros Capture Championship in Welland
The Mitchell Sherman Plumbing 15U OBA Astros competed in the Welland Canada Day Extravaganza 'B' Tournament July 1-3, capturing the championship with an exciting 14-12 comeback win over the Lasalle Titans.

Starter Keegan Priestap pitched the complete game victory for the Astros and Carson Harmer led the attack on offense, belting a monster two-run home run in the second inning that cleared a 385' wall, followed by an inside-the-park two-run home run to add insurance in the final at-bat.
After shutting down Lasalle in the top of the first, Dominic Marshall led off the bottom half for the Astros with a triple into the right field corner, racing home on an error on the relay throw and the locals were off to a 5-0 lead to start the game.  Leading 8-2 after four complete innings, things would get a little shaky for Mitchell as Lasalle used a combination of timely hits, key bunts, and a couple of Astro errors to score seven runs and take a 9-8 lead after five innings.  Down for the first time all game, Ethan Jarmuth would reach base on an error to open the bottom of the sixth.  Priestap would drive him in with the game-tying run on an RBI triple to deep right centre, scoring the go-ahead run on Marshall's base hit moments later.  Mitchell would plate a total of six runs in the inning, regaining the lead 14-9.  Lasalle would charge back hard, scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh before first baseman Charlie Geiger fielded a throw in the dirt, recovered, and relayed to catcher Kellen Russwurm to nab the final out at the plate trying to sneak in on the play.  Marshall and Harmer would each finish with three runs scored, and Hayden Nicholson and Logan Verberne each added a pair.
The locals opened pool play on Canada Day evening with a lopsided 18-0 mercy win in three innings over the Creemore Cardinals 15U Select team with Priestap the lone Mitchell pitcher to see action on the mound.  Saturday morning's matchup brought familiar league opponent Dorchester, whom the Astros had just defeated 13-10 st home five days earlier.  Mitchell once again came out on top by a score of 7-3 as Harmer and Russwurm each scored two runs.  The defensive highlight of the weekend for the Astros came in the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out, as a comebacker to pitcher Jarmuth resulted in a 1-2-6 double play to end the inning.  Mitchell would finish up round robin play with a 14-0 mercy win over Vaughan 14U AA to post a 3-0 record and the lowest runs against to secure the top seed for the playoff round on Sunday morning.  Ryan Klumper would pitch the distance for the shutout win, spinning a two-hitter with seven strikeouts.
Dorchester would draw the 4th seed for the semi-finals, looking to avenge their loss from the previous day.  After allowing a leadoff walk to score, starter Joel Meinen would settle in allowing only one hit in three innings with a pair of strikeouts.  The Astro bats went to work in support, building a 4-0 lead at the end of the third.  The wheels completely fell off in the top of the fourth, as Dorchester hit, walked, and took advantage of Mitchell errors to score a total of ten runs with two out and stun the Astros for an 11-4 lead.  Down but not out, the locals would chip away and then rally in the bottom of the sixth with seven more runs to come from behind for a 15-11 victory.  Harmer would finish up in relief of Meinen for the win and Russwurm led with three runs scored.  Marshall hit two doubles, and Russwurm, Jarmuth, and Klumper all had extra-base hits.
