Fantastic Weekend in Waterloo
The Royaldawn Farms Peewee OBA Team had a fantastic showing in the Gary Marciniak 'A' Major Peewee Tournament in Waterloo this last weekend.

With 8 of our kids being minor peewee age, we gave up a lot of size and strength to the much larger major peewee teams.  But what we lacked in strength we made up for with skill, enthusiasm, and determination.

The first game of the weekend was against a solid Newmarket team.  Early in the game, our boys seemed a bit nervous, playing up not only in age but in classification.  After giving up a 7-run inning 2nd inning the team had a decision to make:  either give up or fight back.  From that point on, every player was ready for every pitch on both sides of the ball.  Errors were made but nothing was given away--we made the other teams earn everything.

The boys battled back, never giving up, eventually ending up on the wrong side of a 14-9 decision against Newmarket.  The pitching from Justin Morrison, Owen Shore, and Dawson Dietz was solid and offensive pressure was applied from all slots in the batting order.  From that early set back they learned that they indeed did belong at this level of competition.

The second game on Saturday morning was against a strong team from Beaver Valley.  These boys hit the ball hard but some great pitching from starter Charlie Wood and reliever Kale Murray, along with great defensive plays all over the diamond kept the game in reach.  The offence kept chipping away every inning and managed to get the winning run to second base with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th.  Unfortunately we couldn't get him home and dropped the game 8-7.  But again, the boys were learning that they belonged to be playing here.

By the final game of the day the boys were rolling in confidence despite two losses. A combination of aggressive at bats and base running overwhelmed the 'A' team from Innsifil and the boys rolled to a 21-2 win in 3 innings.  Great pitching from Owen Shore, Dawson Dietz, and Will Korver with some solid defence, including 2 double plays in the 3 defensive innings, lead to a decisive victory.

A special mention goes to the workmanlike effort of Luke Murray behind the plate.  Anything that can be blocked was and many balls that had no business being blocked were blocked as well.  Every coach we played, and some who were just watching, commented on his play.  It's not easy taking all that abuse in the hot son under all of that equipment.

While the results were not there, the team made great strides in learning to compete on every pitch.  The coaching staff is looking forward to seeing just how far this team can go in their development this year.
