Chatham Major Peewee A Tournament Champs!
Submitted By James Morrison on Sunday, July 30, 2017
This weekend the RoyalDawn Farms Peewee team travelled to Chatham to take part in the Major Peewee A Tournament and ran the table, coming home as the UNDEFEATED CHAMPS. Relentless offensive pressure and stellar defence piled up the wins and set some baseball records as well.

The other teams were mostly older, definitely bigger, and had their fans cheering for all their home runs on the short fields in Chatham.  But the tournament champs took a different approach:  effective pitching, hard nosed defence, and an offence that made the other team get outs.  In the 5 games of the tournament, the Mitchell hitters didn't hit one home run but only struckout 9 times, including zero strikeouts in the championship game.  In the balanced attack every Mitchell batter scored at least 4 runs over the 5 games with every hitter having a clutch, two-out hit at some point in the tournament.

The tournament started out with Mitchell playing the Binbrook Bisons.  Mitchell took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never relinquished the lead in an 11-5 win.  Charlie Wood got the win on the mound and Tanner Meinen came in for the save.

Saturday started off with a game against Corunna.  The defence remained sharp and with three double-plays in the first three innings set an all-time baseball record that can never be surpassed.  Starter Luke Murray benefited from the great defence and got the complete game 12-3 win.

Justin Morrison got the start against a dangerous Oakville team.  He was backed up by Kale Murray and finally by Coulter Rolph who closed the door, ending the game with a strikeout with Mitchell getting the 11-6 victory.  The victory sent Mitchell into Sunday's playoff as the top seed.

Sunday morning saw a rematch with Corunna.  Starter Kale Murray got the win with Owen Shore coming in for the save.  Hats off to Corunna's clean up hitter Johnston who supplied all 5 of Corunna's offence with 2 home runs.  But it was no match for Mitchell's 14 runs which landed Mitchell in the championship final.

Charlie Wood was back on the mound for the final game against a large, powerful Oakville team.  Wood ran into a bit of trouble the second time through the order in the top of the 3rd but battled through and limited the damage to a 3 run deficit.  Mitchell's offence answered back in the bottom of the third to tie the game up 7-7.

Mitchell took a modest 10-8 lead into the 5th and Tanner Meinen came in to settle things down.  With a runner on base and the clean up hitter, who had already hit two home runs in the game, up to bat.  Meinen took a different approach to the problem, throwing 3 fantastic knuckle balls in a row which left the Oakville hitter walking away shaking his head.  That turned the tide and the very next hitter hit a laser ground ball that turned into an inning ending double play.  That took all of the energy and will to win out of the opponent.

In the bottom of the 5th the Mitchell offence sensed weakness and pounced, scoring 8 runs, the last 6 with two outs, to end the game in with a 18-8 mercy.

A special congratulations to Tanner Meinen who was chosen tournament MVP for his performances on the diamond, his great attitude, the ability to handle himself in the midst of a couple of questionable calls, and the general leadership he showed his younger teammates throughout the weekend.
Congratulations on well deserved success to the whole team.  This starts the month long build up to OBA Championships in Leamington on Labour Day weekend.
