Rookies Victorious At Mitchell Minor Baseball Day
Playing in front of a raucous home crowd supporting the inaugural Mitchell Minor Baseball Day on June 5th, the Stickhandler Tier 1 Major Rookie Astros defeated the visiting Goderich Seahawks by a score of 28-11.
The Seahawks loaded the bases early in the top of the first, but Mitchell escaped without any damage on a double-play turned by Dominic Marshall and Kellen Russwurm.
The locals answered back in the bottom half, scoring four runs on a total of six base hits. The bats stayed hot in the second inning, as Jordan Visneskie, Joel Meinen, and Ben Medhurst each drove in a run, and Russwurm contributed a two-run double. Visneskie had a monster day at the plate going 5-for-5 with 5 runs scored including two triples and a towering HR to right-centre in the 5th, finishing with a total of 9 RBI's.
Key hits with runners in scoring position contributed strongly to the win, as each Mitchell player notched at least one RBI in the effort. Extra-base hits were also recorded by Carson Harmer and Ryan Hubbard, and Jack Miller was also 5-for-5 and scored each time.
Strong defensive plays were made by Marshall, Russwurm, Miller, and Medhurst.
