ANOTHER MERCY FOR THE ZEHR INSURANCE BANTAM BLUE TEAM
Three more exciting games have been played by the Zehr Insurance Bantam Blue Boys Baseball team over the past week and a half.  They recorded a close 4 to 2 loss to St. Mary’s, a 12 to 2 mercy over Grand Bend followed by another tight one with Goderich Grey ending in an 8 to 6 loss.

On Saturday, June 11th, the boys had an early start to their day as they travelled to St. Mary’s for a 9am game.  They took control right off the bat as the first two at bats, Ryan HARMER and Jake MONDEN, resulted in runs.  St. Mary’s answered back in the 2nd inning with two runs of their own to tie up the game.  The scoreboard remained motionless until the 5th when St. Mary’s drove in two more runs and left Mitchell needing to fight for a win.  Mitchell battled hard, and despite getting themselves into a scoring position a couple more times just were not able to cross the plate.

Offensively, Curt EIDT played the hump where he maxed out his 90 pitches and registered four strikeouts for this game.  Jake WALKER came in partway through the 5th and finished the game with a strikeout of his own.

Two days later the boys hosted Grand Bend.  A few big hits coupled with some aggressive base running led to a far more productive game this time.  HARMER, EIDT, Drew MACLEAN, Jackson MACARTHUR, Brenden BOVILLE, Nathan HOOD and WALKER all scored.  EIDT hit a huge triple to centre field in the 1st inning which gave the boys a surge of momentum for the rest of the game.  Brayden CRONIN-HORAN placed a perfect hit, also in the 1st, giving him an RBI and the team a 4 to 1 lead.

MONDEN took to the mound for the first four innings logging at least one strikeout per inning with an impressive total of six strikeouts.  The 5th and final inning rookie pitcher, MACLEAN, was brought in to shut things down and he did just that.  He allowed only four batters and struck out two of them.

A deep hit to the left field fence by a Grand Bend player in the 2nd looked like a definite triple, but left fielder, HOOD, used his amazing speed to catch up to the hit ball, whipped it to his cut-off, EIDT, who finished the relay to 3rd baseman, WALKER, in time for the tag and the exciting out!

After a week-long break, the boys toured to Goderich.  And just like previous games, batter number one, this time Reid RAMSEYER, scored the team’s first run of the game.  Subsequently, MONDEN scored two more runs followed by James COPELAND, Kyle RICHARDSON and Tristan BEEHLER each adding singles.  RAMSEYER got himself into a pickle between 1st and 2nd and easily made his way safely back to 1st base, but not according to the ump.  MONDEN got himself two RBI’s and used his skillful base-running skills to get himself into a scoring position by taking advantage of a few Goderich errors and stolen bases.  COPELAND had a big double to right field plus some stolen bases to aid him in his run.  Eric GETTLER was very patient in the batter’s box which paid off for him as he got a base on balls walk.  He later stole both 2nd and 3rd base, but didn’t have an opportunity to make it home.  With bases loaded in the 3rd and two outs, BOVILLE had a hard hit past 2nd base giving him two RBI’s.  BEEHLER also stole two bases during the game…proving that aggressive base-running is key to scoring runs for this team.

On the offence, BEEHLER robbed the other team of a potential run in the 2nd inning with a beauty catch in right field.  EIDT once again pitched out.  He kept this game close by delivering a few strike-outs and making some key plays from the mound.  MONDEN got the call in the bullpen to take over at the end of the 5th to finish off the inning and he prevented any further runs from being scored.  RAMSEYER made his debut appearance on the mound in the 6th after having caught for most of the game.  He walked the first batter, allowed a double for the second and after regrouping he stood tall and proceeded to easily strike out the next three batters.

The result, three great games with total team participation and fun had by all!

Good job boys.
