Strong Defensive Play In Two Close Games This Week
The Major Rookie Tier 2 Team 1 Your Neighbourhoood Credit Union team travelled to Parkhill on one of the hottest days of the year and despite some great defense would come up a few runs short in the 7-4 loss. Charlie Geiger, Blake Redfern and Hayden Nicholson would snag grounders and knock down pop flies to record outs on the base paths in the five innings of play.
Offensively, the usually hard hitting team would struggle with high pitches from the machine, but Geiger and Redfern would connect with the ball for a double each while Nicholson, Josie Walker, Keegan Priestap, Brennan Ward, Calum Harris and Jacob Bice would each add at least one single in the game.
Mitchell would host St.Mary's Grey on Thursday this week and would see their bats come alive with Redfern leading the hitting with three doubles and two singles. Geiger would also double and add 4 singles in the game. Also crossing the plate to bring the run total to 18 was Nicholson, Priestap, Carter O'Brien, Max Vandervelde and Jacob Bice.
The players would hold St. Mary's to 16 runs and come away with the win as some key defensive plays were made by Jacob Bice at third base, as well as Redfern, O'Brien, Vandervelde, Harris and Brooklyn Boville at second base and by Brennan Ward at first base.
The Rookies will finish off their regular season games next week against Listowel and Mitchell's Tier 2 Team 2.
